In an attempt to increase its manpower in the fight against coronavirus, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is planning to hire nearly 600 healthcare workers over the next week. With 3,107 cases by 7:00 pm on April 16, Maharashtra became the first state in the country breach the 3,000+ mark. This includes 1,896 cases from Mumbai, which has been termed as the hotspot for the virus in the state.

“We have an immediate requirement for nearly 600 healthcare workers and it will take us around a week or so to finalise their recruitments," Suresh Kakani, BMC additional municipal commissioner told Livemint.

Kakani further added that they have a waiting list of the applicants for the posts of nurses, drivers, and ward boys. The BMC is planning to hire the maximum number of people from the list amid the pandemic. The civic body has issued a public notice inviting new applicants for these posts but they will only be considered after the waiting list exhausts.

Kakani stated that it will take a lot of time to recruit these applicants as they will have to conduct written examinations to scrutinise the open market applicants. Meanwhile, the additional BMC commissioner was unable to confirm the number of public applications BMC had received for these posts.

Mumbai, being the hotspot for the pandemic, has been posed with the issue of manpower shortage at its hospitals as the number of COVID-19 cases have been on the rise. The situation grew so dire that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had to appeal for helping hands from retired army personnel, with any experience of health care to join the administration’s containment efforts.

In the meantime, Kakani has stated that the city currently has a vacancy for 275 nurses and close to 200 from the waiting list will be filing the posts. However, Kakani added that if they are unable to match the requirement from the waiting list, then the open market quota will go up.
