The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Maharashtra state government are taking all the necessary measures to keep the coronavirus outbreak in control. On one hand, the officials are looking at measures to control the number of cases and to ensure that the people testing positive get the required treatment and on the other, they have to also control the misinformation from spreading.

The authorities are now keeping an eye on people spreading misinformation. In one such instance, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has issued a notice to a Mumbai-based doctor who had termed the virus as a "Chinese fad" which will not survive in the Indian summer.

Dr Anil Patil, a Dadar resident has been asked to present an explanation in front of MMC. MMC has asked whether he has any study to substantiate his claims.

"The notice has been issued to Dr Anil Patil about whether he has any study or database to substantiate his claims about the virus," MMC president Dr Shivkumar Uttekar said on Tuesday.

The MMC president said that Dr Patil had made several claims in his interviews that are prima facie violative of advisories issued by the central government.

Dr Patil had reportedly made claims that the fear over novel coronavirus is unwarranted and that the virus will not survive in Indian summer. He had also stated that the novel coronavirus which has globally claimed thousands if lives globally, is a "Chinese fad" which is aimed at creating business opportunity for factories that manufacture masks.

The doctor had also claimed that the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which had appeared in China in 2002, had no effect on Indians.

"His video clips have gone viral on social media, which may encourage people to remain careless about personal hygiene. Hence we have issued notice to him," Dr Uttekar said.

The total number of cases in the state has gone up to 41 and Maharashtra still is the Indian state with most number of novel coronavirus cases.

Meanwhile, the state also recorded the first death in Maharashtra on Tuesday morning. On March 17, 2020, it was reported that a 65-year-old patient died due to Coronavirus, at Mumbai's Kasturba Hospital.

Identified as a businessman, the patient had returned from Dubai, and was earlier admitted at Hinduja Hospital and later shifted to Kasturba upon testing positive.
