As the number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra is increasing on a daily basis, four people have tested positive for the coronavirus at Mantralaya (state secretariat). The Mantralaya was sanitised on Monday after three housekeeping staff and a doctor working for the emergency ambulance service tested positive for COVID-19. 

Additional Chief Secretary (PWD) Manoj Saunik said that every inch has been sanitised and the contact tracing is ongoing. “Some people have been quarantined. All protocols for screening are being followed,” the Indian Express quoted Saunik as saying. 

As this happened, the administration has decided to install thermal scanners at the security gate from Tuesday. The Public Works Department (PWD) has also written to the concerned ward officer requesting that all department staffers be tested. An additional thermal scanner will Also be provided to the PWD department. 

“The department staffers come into regular contact with sanitation workers, all staffers should be tested,” the PWD said. 

The housekeeping department employees the contractual workers attached with a private company and one of them developed a fever and was tested positive for the COVID-19. Around 40 more people were tested. The private company staffers are stationed to clean the lobby and outer area of the Mantralaya. 

Of the four people tested positive for COVID-19, one contractual worker and two members of the emergency medical staff were staying at Mantralaya itself to limit exposure. 

Maharashtra has become the worst-hit state in India with over 8,590 COVID-19 cases and 369 deaths till date. Of the 8,590 cases in Maharashtra, the number in Mumbai alone has risen to 5,776. 

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday stipulated that the lockdown in the red zones including Mumbai and Pune may be extended beyond May 3.
