Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to encourage business through e-commerce. Pawar requested the centre to allow online shopping and home delivery of the good to function without trouble during the lockdown.

“Conventional shops and stores will be at a disadvantage due to various restrictions which have been imposed and social distancing norms which may acquire permanence,” Sharad Pawar wrote in his letter.

Pawar stated that all businesses which are unable to handle social distancing will suffer heavily amid the coronavirus outbreak. The prominent sectors of the economy such as aviation, transport, tourism, conventional retail, entertainment and media were likely to suffer for long.

“All businesses unable to handle the social distancing will suffer. A sizeable number of businesses are not likely to survive and many will lose jobs,” Pawar added.

NCP chief opined in his letter that the e-commerce and home delivery will help generate jobs for people amid the coronavirus outbreak.

In his letter addressed to PM Modi and Union Home Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Pawar also demanded additional funds of ₹1,00,000 crore for Maharashtra in the wake of the coronavirus lockdown while stating that the state will not be in a position to beat the coronavirus pandemic in case there is no fiscal help.

“It is imperative that in these times the Indian Government should offer sustainable financial assistance to states. The Maharashtra government requests additional grants of untied nature of ₹1 lakh crores for the financial year 2020-21,” Sharad Pawar wrote in his letter which he shared on Sunday on his twitter handle.

The NCP chief further said that the states will play an important role in the “eventual recovery” of the Indian economy. If the financial help is not provided by the centre, states will not be in a position to supplement the required national government efforts, he added.
