The vaccination drive in Mumbai to begin soon in four major hospitals. On Sunday, Covaxin, which is developed by the Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech, has been approved.

A day after the expert committee of the Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation (CDSCO) made recommendations to the Drugs Controller General of India to grant permission for restricted emergency use of the vaccines, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr VG Somani on January 3 announced that the vaccines of Serum Institute of India (SII), Covishield, and Bharat Biotech, Covaxin, have been granted permission for the emergency use.

The vaccination will be available for the coronavirus affected patients at KEM, Sion, Nair and Cooper hospitals in phases, said Dr Sanjay Oak, Chief COVID Task Force. In the first phase, doctors, nurses, ward boys, cleaners and police will be vaccinated. Later, the vaccine will be given to those with comorbid conditions and people above 50 years of age.

“According to studies, it is observed that no vaccine is 100 per cent safe. However, studies have shown that this vaccine is safe. Besides, the vaccine produces antibodies and boosts immunity. Municipal hospitals have huge medical studies. Vaccination programs have been implemented beforehand. The list with details of COVID patients have been prepared, Dr Oak said.

Moreover, on January 3, the Ahmedabad-based Cadila Healthcare Limited vaccine was also approved. The country has achieved its third major victory in the fight against the pandemic.
