On Wednesday, May 12, Pune divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao informed that Bharat Biotech through its associate firm Biovet is expected to roll out its first batch of COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin in the next 100 days.

According to reports, in the midst of the pandemic, Rao along with Pune collector Rajesh Deshmukh visited the site on Wednesday and held meetings with the officials to discuss the same.

In recent developments, the Bombay High Court had allowed Biovit Pvt Ltd, an associate company of Bharat Biotech, to take possession of a ready to use vaccine manufacturing facility in Maharashtra's Pune District to produce the vaccine for coronavirus, Covaxin.

Moreover, Biovet, which is headquartered and registered in Bengaluru focuses primarily on veterinary vaccines along with shots for foot and mouth diseases.

On the other hand, the trials for the Covaxin vaccine on children from two to 18 years has been cleared by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). This happens to be the first time when a vaccine for the coronavirus will be tested on children. Speaking about the same, Bharat Biotech stated that its phase two and three trials would be carried out on "525 healthy volunteers". Furthermore, according to a government statement, the drug regulator accepted the recommendation of an expert committee on vaccines after careful thought.

Meanwhile, the trials are to take place at various sites, including AIIMS, Delhi, AIIMS, Patna and Meditrina Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur.
