Mumbai, which has been the hotbed for the coronavirus, has shut down fifteen COVID-19 care centres across five municipal corporations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) this week.

This happens to be a great feat considering that the MMR was reporting a rise in the cases of coronavirus just a month back. However, in just a month, the daily number of cases in MMR minus Mumbai spread across Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts – has halved from 2,609 cases on October 1 to 1,041 cases every day on October 30.

The BMC had earlier increased the number of daily tests in the month of October as compared to September. It was duly noted that the number of infections was lower compared to the number of tests conducted. In the month of September, 17 per cent of the total number of tests conducted tested positive whereas, in October, the figure stood at 14 per cent. Currently, the target is 16,000 to 20,000 tests per day. In the month of October, 3,52,770 tests have been conducted. Of these, 47,748 patients tested positive for the coronavirus.

As on 29th October 14,68,000 tests for the coronavirus have been conducted in Mumbai. Of these, 2,52,888 people have been found to be affected by COVID-19. Accordingly, the incidence of infected patients in Mumbai is 17.17 per cent. With the increase in the number of tests in Mumbai, the percentage of cases per day has also come down since October.
