Several cases of coronavirus mutation have been observed in Maharashtra which has led to the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.

According to a report in NDTV, senior researchers have stated that they are yet to observe the behaviour of the virus, which includes how fast or slow is it affecting people further adding that it is too soon to call it a strain. Moreover, the researchers added that they are conducting a gene sequencing with regards to the same and the results will be available in 10 to 15 days.

Meanwhile, the sequencing tests were conducted in the Amaravati, Akola and Yavatmal districts of the state. The mutations have been found in three samples in Amaravati, three in Yavatmal and two in Akola.

However, the Indian Council of Medical Research has informed that the South African strain of the virus has been detected in four people and the Brazil variant seen in one so far. Moreover, there are 187 cases of UK strain.

On the other hand, on Thursday, February 18, Maharashtra recorded 5,427 cases of the coronavirus taking the COVID-19 tally in the state to 20,81,520. The city of Mumbai continues to be a major novel coronavirus hotspot with 736 patients recorded in the day. At present, there are 40,858 active cases in the state. With 2,543 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered cases soared to 19,87,804.

In addition, the COVID-19 positivity rate, recovery rate and fatality rate in Maharashtra stand at 13.41 per cent, 95.5 per cent and 2.48 per cent respectively.
