Dharavi reports 30 COVID-19 cases; highest daily rise since last year

Amidst the spike in COVID-19 cases, according to reports, the total number of active cases of coronavirus has risen to 140 in Dharavi.

On Thursday, March 18, Dharavi recorded 30 fresh cases of the coronavirus, the highest spike since September 2020. According to reports, the slum-dominated area in G North ward had recorded 33 cases on September 11, last year.

As of now, the total number of active cases has risen to 140 in Dharavi. As of February 26, Dharavi had 51 active cases. According to the data shared by Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), G North ward, which covers Dadar, Dharavi and Mahim, recorded 102 new cases on Thursday, taking the total number of active cases in the ward to 673.

On the other hand, a separate vaccination centre will be conducting vaccinations from Monday, March 22 in Dharavi which is touted to vaccinate at least 1,000 citizens every day. Meanwhile, there are about one and a half to two lakh people in the age group 45-60 residing in Dharavi. In order to vaccinate them, five cells will be set up at the vaccination centre. Moreover, five people can be vaccinated at the same time.

In addition, testing plans are being drafted to control the infection, and clean up marshals have been deployed in several areas under the directive of the municipality. In recent developments, the Mumbai Police has taken up the task of disciplining the citizens through patrolling. Every department is raising awareness among the locals with the help of representatives. According to authorities, officials are controlling the crowds in the market and cracking down on those walking without face masks.
