The western suburbs of Mumbai have emerged as the new COVID-19 hotspots in the city while Dharavi - one of the largest slums in Asia - has managed to flatten the curve. The number of COVID-19 cases has been increasing in areas from Andheri to Dahisar.

Along with COVID-19, there are many patients who are suffering from other ailments as well including those who require dialysis for kidney disease. However, it has been claimed that the hospitals run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which are now being used as COVID-19 hospitals in these areas don’t have the dialysis facility.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Yogesh Sagar has accused the BMC of negligence and said that “dialysis facilities for COVID-19 patients are not available in BMC hospital from Goregaon to Dahisar”.

Sagar said that this was a complete failure of the administration if the civic body despite having funds can’t provide this facility in north Mumbai. “What is the use of BMC’s funds of ₹80,000 crores if a COVID-19 patient is sent to Nair Hospital in South Mumbai for dialysis,” he asserted.

The number of cases in Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar areas of Mumbai has been increasing exponentially due to which the BMC and Police administration has implemented heavy restrictions on the movements of citizens to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The BMC has also implemented the Dharavi model and initiated screening in part s of north Mumbai where the cases have been increasing. The testing has also been increased as per the official word.
