As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 40-45% of Dharavi's target population aged 18 years and above are fully inoculated against the novel coronavirus. The authorities have, however, stated that it is difficult to know the exact number of people in Dharavi  who are fully vaccinated.

The civic body's health officials are conducting door-to-door surveys, which is giving them only estimated numbers.

According to the 2011 census, Dharavi has a total population of around 4,45,000. However, when the civic administration had conducted door-to-door surveys in Dharavi for polio ("My Family, My Responsibility" campaign), it revealed that its total population could be higher than the 2011 census.

It is only possible for them to have an estimated population of Dharavi since they have a large number of floating population in the area who come in daily or weekly, said a senior civic official from the G-North ward.

The official further stated that few of them who are not Dharavi residents choose to get jabbed at an NGO-operated health post or CSR-organised camps. In Dharavi, there are two municipal vaccination centres. A private hospital and a bank are the operating camps under CSR. People who get vaccinated in these camps do not get counted in their total vaccination figures. The vaccination has taken off since July in Dharavi as awareness to get vaccinated has increased, said the official.

As per the civic body's latest data,  nearly 99% of Mumbai's eligible population has taken their first dose. Meanwhile, the BMC has said that it will conduct the next serosurvey in February 2022.
