The chemist responsible for Digambar Dhuri’s death has been finally penalised and his pharmacy’s licence has been cancelled permanently by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The chemist had given Dhuri a cancer drug instead of vitamin tablet and in addition, was not a pharmacist.
The pharmacy’s licence was cancelled earlier but they got a stay order over the cancellation. However, this time, Food and Drug Administration minister Girish Bapat stated that their licence has been permanently cancelled. Looking at the gravity of the situation, Bapat himself intervened and ordered to permanently cancel the licence.
67-year-old Digambar Dhuri in October last year was returning home with his friend after visiting a restaurant and suddenly, Dhuri felt dizzy and fell on the road. After visiting the hospital, the doctor wrote a prescription and Dhuri purchased the medicines and went home. For the next five days, he consumed the tablets two times a day but suddenly he got seriously ill and was again admitted to the hospital.
But Dhuri wouldn’t respond to any medicines and soon succumbed to his illness. It was later revealed that Dhuri had consumed medicine for cancer patients instead of vitamin tablets. The family reached out to FDA who later found out that the chemist had given Dhuri, “Folitrax 10” instead of “Folimax 10” which resulted in his demise.
