Coronavirus Pandemic: State government asks private hospitals to ready isolation wards

In order to amplify the resources to fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the state government has asked private hospitals to ready isolation wards on a priority basis. Accordingly, various private hospitals have taken necessary measures to establish isolation wards. The move is expected to ease up the pressure felt by the government hospitals.

Former Health Minister Deepak Sawant recently conducted an examination of all the hospitals and had a conversation with all the doctors in the respective hospitals. He ensured that whether the hospitals are eligible for isolation facilities as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.

Keeping in mind, that the number of patients can increase in the coming days, the government has decided to expand its operations by erecting isolation facilities in private hospitals. Dr. Sawant said that if necessary, the authorities will increase the number of beds in the isolation ward.

Previously, there were instances where the quarantined patients reportedly ran away from the hospitals due to the poor quality of hygiene in isolation wards in government hospitals.

  • HN Reliance Hospital: 2
  • Jaslok Hospital: 2
  • Nanavati Hospital: 4
  • Bombay Hospital: 4
  • Kokilaben Hospital: 17
  • Fortis, Mulund: 2
  • Raheja Hospital: 22
  • Hinduja Hospital: 16

In other news, for the first time in the history of Indian Railways, the state government has decided that Mumbai local train - often referred to as the city's lifeline - will not function until March 31, 2020. No passengers will be able to travel on Mumbai's central, western or harbour lines.

The government is taking various measures to counter the pandemic. In one such initiative, the entire country observed 'Janta Curfew' on Sunday, March 22, 2020, after PM Narendra Modi's instructions. The entire city of Mumbai was quiet and empty, fighting Coronavirus together.
