Cabinet Minister Amit Deshmukh announced in the legislative council that as the machinery to treat cancer at the hospital was not functioning for more than six months, it will soon be upgraded.

As the cases for cancer are increasing, civic-run JJ Hospital will soon get a state-of-the-art cancer centre for treatment and research on the disease. On Tuesday, March 3, Cabinet Minister Amit Deshmukh announced in the legislative council that as the machinery to treat cancer at the hospital was not functioning for more than six months, it will soon be upgraded. 

In the year 2019, 11,306 people were detected with cancer across the state and it has taken toll of 5,727 people. Other hospitals who have relentlessly working in this direction are ACI Cumballa Hill Hospital in Grant Road and Jaslok Hospital in Peddar Road.

ACI Cumballa Hill Hospital has come up with a unique initiative to help women get rid of fears and myths regarding breast cancer and breast diseases. They came up with a social campaign called ‘The Pink Projectthat helps women understand about breast cancer and the importance of timely treatment.   

The most common age group for breast cancer in India is 40-55.  For early detection Breast self-examination is a vital screening tool. However, it is also advised to have a regular physical examination by doctor. In case of any doubt, the doctor prescribes mammography which should be done immediately and may go a long way in patient recovering successfully. The sole motto of this campaign is to spread awareness regarding breast cancer and breast diseases via a comprehensive clinic that will be launched soon.   It also emphasizes that women should take time out of their erratic schedules and be proactive to visit a doctor on case they spot unusual signs and symptoms of breast cancer like a lump in the breast and nipple retraction.
