Cancer does not only affect the patient but also drastically affects their family. The number of people being diagnosed with this fatal disease is increasing rapidly. However, there are many people who have faced this and even penned their journey of how they managed to deal with this disease. Here are the top five memoirs in no particular order:

1. Close To The Bone- Lisa Ray

Published by Harper Collins India, Close to the Bone by Lisa Ray is an unflinching, deeply moving account of her nomadic existence: her entry into the Indian entertainment industry at sixteen, her relationship with her Bengali father and Polish mother, life on the movie sets and her brush with the Oscars, her battle with eating disorders, being diagnosed with multiple myeloma at thirty-seven, her spiritual quest, lovers and traitors, mentors and dream-makers, and the heartaches and triumphs along the way. It is also about Lisa's quest for love. Close to the Bone is Lisa Ray's brave and inspiring story of a life lived on her terms.

2. Healed: How Cancer Gave Me A New Life- Manisha Koirala

Published by Penguin, Healed by Manisha Koirala is a story of her brush with ovarian cancer.  From her treatment in the US and the wonderful care provided by the oncologists there to how she rebuilt her life once she returned home, the book takes us on an emotional roller-coaster ride through her many fears and struggles and shows how she eventually came out triumphant.

As she completes eight years of being cancer-free, she shares her story-one marked by apprehensions, disappointments and uncertainties-and the lessons she learnt along the way. Through her journey, she unravels cancer for us and inspires us to not buckle under its fear, but emerge alive, kicking and victorious.

3. The Test of My Life- Yuvraj Singh

Who doesn't remember the iconic 2011 World Cup match and Yuvraj Singh's contribution towards it? The book 'The Test of My Life: From Cricket to Cancer and Back' is an autobiography of Yuvraj Singh. This book has the history of Yuvraj Singh’s life. The ups and downs he faced in his career and how he comes out stronger from his toughest days. The book consists of two stories. The firat part states how Yuvraj Singh had become the role model for the people and second part is about his fight against cancer. During this time he was all alone when he was in Indianapolis, USA.

4. The Kiss of Life- Emraan Hasmi

Published by Penguin India's Blue Salt, 'The Kiss Of Life' by Emraan Hasmi is an autobiographical account of his life when his son Ayaan was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. The book revolves around Hasmi's journey of struggling through the ups and downs of Bollywood when his son was being treated in Canada.

5. Uplift- Barbara Delinsky

Different from all of the books above, Uplift by Barbara Delinsky is a collection of anecdotes of 300 breast cancer survivors. The newly revised edition of UPLIFT contains the latest medical information, as well as new stories from inspiring cancer survivors.

While these are great books, here is an audio book that we recommend.

Writer and Director Tahira Kashyap was also diagnosed with breast cancer and has recorded a podcast series titled 'My ex-breast' with Amazon's Audible. Last year, Tahira was diagnosed with Stage 0 breast cancer and had to go through a mastectomy procedure for the same. My ex-breast is a 7-episode series wherein she talks about her journey and how her family supported her during her struggle.
