Three critical care unit (CCU) specialists will be appointed at the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, who will be adept at handling serious patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This is being done to increase the number of cadaver organ donors. Within the next two months, these specialists will be hired.

When patients are declared brain dead, several measures have to be taken care of including maintaining blood pressure and heart function, said KEM Dean, Dr Sangeeta Rawat. CCU specialists make sure they don’t crash before the organs are harvested.

Along with this, to make organ transportation available at affordable rates, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, along with the aviation ministry, is working on designing prototype boxes which carry organs on planes.
