In a medical triumph, a harvested human heart was transported from Nagpur to Pune in an Indian Air Force (IAF) plane on Wednesday, creating waves of hope for a recipient in dire need. The heart, retrieved from a brain-dead woman, underwent a successful transplant at the Army Institute of Cardio-Thoracic Sciences (AICTS) in Pune, Maharashtra. The success of this time-critical operation was made possible through the establishment of a green corridor, ensuring a seamless and rapid journey for the vital organ.

Paving the Way for Life-Saving Transplants

To facilitate the prompt delivery of the heart, the civil administration collaborated to create a green corridor, a dedicated route cleared of all obstructions, to expedite organ transplants and save lives. Utilizing an IAF AN-32 aircraft, the heart covered a distance of over 700 km, flying from Nagpur to Pune in just 90 minutes. The efficient execution of the green corridor initiative played a pivotal role in ensuring the heart reached its destination without delay.

The Donor's Story

The heart's donor, 31-year-old Shubhangi Gannyarpawar from Nagpur, tragically succumbed to severe blood clotting in her brain after being admitted to a private hospital on July 20 due to severe headaches. Despite the devastating loss, her family displayed immense selflessness by consenting to organ donation, paving the way for a remarkable act of kindness that would change the life of another forever.

Donor's Organs Transplanted to Four Recipients

Dinesh Mandpe, the convenor of the zonal transplant coordination centre, approached Shubhangi Gannyarpawar's family with the possibility of organ donation. With the heartfelt consent of her husband and brother, the heart, liver, and two kidneys were donated, providing hope and renewed chances at life for four recipients. One fortunate individual in Pune received the life-saving heart, while three others in Nagpur benefited from the transplant of the remaining organs.
