State Medical Education Minister Amit Vilasrao Deshmukh has said that around 1,204 medical students that graduate from medical colleges from across the state will be hired on a contract basis to help in the fight against the coronavirus in Maharashtra.
Public Health Department data shows that there is a 68 per cent vacancy for Class 1 Medical Officers which includes specialist doctors while the vacancy for general medical officers across the state is 14 per cent.
Students that have completed medical graduation and postgraduation (PG) will be contracted and tasked with handling COVID-19 depending on the requirement of a particular district, the officials said. A total of 1,648 medical students are expected to appear for examinations (postgraduate and specializations) soon with results expected to be announced shortly after.

Maharashtra’s battle with COVID-19 continues as the state recorded 24,619 new cases and 398 deaths on September 17. Currently, around 36,827 citizens are under institutional quarantine, while 3.07 lakh people are either under home quarantine or at designated isolation centres.
Officials have said that around 385 posts for assistant professors in government medical colleges are expected to be filled soon. Separately, around 178 posts are vacant for assistant professors at BMC hospitals, 282 specialist doctors posts at civic hospitals as well as 359 assistant officer posts in COVID-19 hospitals
