With travel restrictions being eased out across the country, in a major blow to tourism, the hilly region of Mahabaleshwar has banned guests aged below 10 and above 60 in view of the pandemic.

This decision was taken keeping in mind the health risk of the particular age group with regards to the novel coronavirus. Earlier, a fresh SOP was released for the hotels.

Mahabaleshwar, a hilly region located in the Western Ghats, in Satara district of Maharashtra is well known for its strawberries, rivers and majestic peaks. Moreover, it is also a sacred pilgrimage place for Hindus as the Krishna river originates from here.

Meanwhile, 18,105 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours in Maharashtra taking the COVID-19 tally in the state to 8,43,844. The recovery rate in the state now stands at 72.58 per cent, as against the national average of 77.09 per cent.

On Thursday, Thackeray speaking at a meeting held to review the coronavirus situation in Western Maharashtra, stated that the recent surge in cases of coronavirus in Satara, Sangli, and Kolhapur districts was a cause of concern further adding that the focus of authorities has now shifted from the Mumbai- Thane region to these places in Western Maharashtra.
