Maharashtra Among 35 States and UTs With Highest COVID-19 Variants of Concern

The growing number of coronavirus variants have increased concern for health authorities across the country. On July 7, the Union Health Ministry announced that the SARS-CoV2 Variants of Concern (VOC) have been identified in 174 districts across 35 states and union territories. 

“Variants of Concern of public health importance detected in community samples in India are Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta,” the Health Ministry went on to say.

The maximum number of Variants of Concern have reportedly surfaced from states such as Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, Telangana, West Bengal, and Gujarat. 

The ministry added that cases belonging to the B.1.617 lineage have now made it to multiple states of the country. The B.1.617 mutation first emerged in Maharashtra and has since been discovered in multiple districts of the state. 

The Health Ministry also shared an update on the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) which was established late last year. While it started off with just 10 laboratories, the ministry said that it now has 28 labs that can monitor the variants of COVID-19.
