Maharashtra on Sunday became the first state to administer 1-crore vaccine injections in India. A total of 1,00,38,421 doses have been given in the state so far, with Rajasthan marginally behind at around 96 lakh doses. State officials had set a target of vaccinating at least 3 crore citizens in Maharashtra, and at this pace, the state could reach the mark in a few months from now.

The state’s Principal Health Secretary, Dr Pradeep Vyas mentioned that around 72.7 per cent of frontline workers and 86.3 per cent of healthcare workers in Maharashtra have been inoculated with at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. He went on to say that around 19.7 per cent of the people in the 45+ age bracket have been vaccinated.

However, it’s clear that the state is somewhat slow in administering both doses of the vaccine with only 9.5 lakh citizens getting two shots while around 89.7 lakh have received at least one dose. This has led to experts saying that Maharashtra’s vaccine coverage (per 1 lakh people) is lower than some of the other states, including Rajasthan.

Vaccinations in some regions of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune, came to a standstill last week due to the unavailability of doses. However, Dr Vyas maintained that vaccine stock will be replenished this week with around 14 lakh doses expected to be available. He went on to say that the state had approximately 9 lakh doses of the vaccine left as of Sunday, April 11.

While vaccinations were slow to pick up when the drive was initiated on January 16 this year, the state had touched nearly 4.6 lakh vaccinations per day on April 3. But the aforementioned vaccine shortage impacted the momentum bringing down inoculations to 2.7 lakh on Friday and 2.8 lakh on Saturday.

As for Mumbai, civic officials mentioned that 62 out of the 71 private vaccination centres will resume operations on April 12. The shortage of vials meant that vaccinations had to be halted across all private facilities on Friday.

“In the last two days, a total of 2.3lakh vaccines have been given to Mumbai. Mumbai received around 99,000 doses on Friday and 1,34,970 doses on Saturday,” the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said adding that public vaccination centres will continue to run as per the regular schedule.

Mumbai administered only 33,256 shots on April 11 across state-run and municipal centres. Of these, around 24,237 were aged over 45, while 7,290 of them were senior citizens. Additionally, 1,149 frontline and 580 healthcare workers received their doses as well. With a total of 16.7 lakh inoculations so far, Mumbai has vaccinated the most people in Maharashtra.
