COVID-19 cases in Mumbai are on a rise, and the city is one of the worst affected in India. Moreover, the supply of coronavirus vaccines has been less due to which more than 75 vaccination centres in Mumbai were temporarily shut down on Friday, April 9, 2021.

The state government is in discussions with the Centre for additional supply of vaccines, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Saturday, April 10, 2021, mentioned that approximately 99,000 doses of Covishield were made available in Mumbai, which, as per the directions issued by the government, will be supplied to state run vaccination centres.

COVID-19 vaccination drive in Mumbai was being held successfully over the last few weeks, however, the supply of vaccines drastically reduced, following which, one of the important centres in Mumbai located in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) was shut down due to the shortage. The BMC also announced the same on Friday, April 9, 2021. Meanwhile, very few centres operated the drive on April 10 and April 11.

Observing the same, several ministers from the ruling party, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) have mentioned that the state government has been biased in sending the supply, both for vaccine and equipment. Maharashtra's Health Minister, Rajesh Tope, in a recently held press meet mentioned that the state has demanded additional doses of vaccine, but the central government has not shown the expected support.

Responding to the same, India's Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that the state government has been playing the political game by involving the centre, thereby attempting to hide their failure in managing COVID-19 crisis.

Meanwhile, Mumbai's mayor Kishori Pednekar, in a recent interview to the PTI mentioned that many vaccination centres in Mumbai which do not have the supply of vaccines will be non-operational for the time being. She had confirmed that more than 76,000 doses were expected to reach Mumbai, but no official confirmation was received regarding the matter, from the Centre.
