Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday launched the 100th COVID testing laboratory in the state. Thackeray inaugurated the molecular and RT PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing lab to detected COVID-19 in Sindhudurg via video conferencing.

With setting up for the laboratory, apart from COVID-19, the tests for other ailments such as monkey fever will also be conducted in the district. Thackeray also said that he would also focus on completing the demand for a government medical college and a state-of-the-art hospital in Sidhudurg.

The Chief Minister praised the efforts of district administration which set up the lab in less time and said that this would help improve the healthcare infrastructure of the district.

This would also prove to be beneficial for the people residing in the district as they won’t have to rush to Mumbai or Goa for treatment during serious conditions, he said.

Earlier, the Chief Minister expressed concerns over the increasing mortality rate in Maharashtra and directed the district authorities to set up a COVID task force in all 36 districts on the lines of one in Mumbai.

The Chief Minister was speaking at a review meeting on the COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra via video conferencing with divisional commissioners, district collectors and municipal commissioners. Maharashtra Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta was also present in the meeting.

The doubling rate in Maharashtra has increased from seven to 23 days in just two months, he said while raising concerns over the increase in mortality rate which has gone up to 4.8 per cent.

Earlier on June 17, during his interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Thackeray had informed that Maharashtra had only one testing laboratory but the number has reached nearly 100.
