Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday urged the central government to provide additional ventilators and other health equipment for the state. 

During his interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing, Thackeray informed that Maharashtra has 10 lakh masks, five lakh Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits and 3,028 ventilators. 

However, they are not enough and the state urgently requires more ventilators especially for the rural areas in Maharashtra in the wake of the rising cases of COVID-19, Thackeray said. 

He further informed that Maharashtra was carrying out aggressive testing of samples and tracing new COVID-19 cases. The state has initiated ‘chase the virus’ program, he said. 

“Currently, there are 97 laboratories for swab testing, 2,347 dedicated COVID hospitals in all 36 districts of Maharashtra,” he said. 

The Chief Minister further said that Maharashtra has also ramped up health infrastructure in its fight against the coronavirus. Under ‘chase the virus’ initiative, the administration has managed the contain the spread of the coronavirus to an extent in Dharavi, he added. 

There are nearly 2,81,290 isolation beds followed by 37,845 oxygen beds and 7,982 ICU beds in Maharashtra, Thackeray informed. 

In his interaction with the Prime Minister, Thackeray gave a presentation listing the steps taken by the state government to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Maharashtra. 

Thackeray said that the state government has provided relaxation under ‘Mission Begin Again’. “We have been talking about lockdown for so many days but I want to talk about unlocking. We have initiated ‘Mission Begin Again’ in Maharashtra,” he added. 

As of June 17, nearly 3,309 fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra, taking the state’s tally to 1,16,752. The death toll in Maharashtra has touched 5,651. In Mumbai alone, the number of coronavirus cases has reached 61,587 while the death toll has risen to 3,244.
