After Maharashtra added ‘missing’ 1,328 additional COVID-19 deaths to its tally, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis has demanded strict action against those responsible for suppressing the data for three months.

Fadnavis, leader of the opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly, has appealed the Uddhav Thackeray government to not ignore the issue of figures being suppressed while labelling the whole issue as “criminal negligence”.

The former Maharashtra Chief Minister shared the data released by the state health department where the death audit committee added additional 1,328 which were earlier referred to as non-COVID-19 deaths.

“It is my sincere request to the State Government that please don’t ignore this entire episode of criminal negligence in the name of reconciliation of numbers. These figures were suppressed for last 3 months. We demand strict action against all those who are responsible for this (sic),” Fadnavis tweeted.

In a statement, Maharashtra chief secretary Ajoy Mehta on Tuesday said that nearly 862 additional deaths in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) areas have been found while 466 in the rest of the state. This comes after the state re-reviewing the COVID-19 deaths in Maharashtra.

Fadnavis also said that the truth is finally out while highlighting that a total number of 1,328 additional deaths will not be recorded as COVID-19 deaths. He also questioned whether the BMC was following the guidelines listed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

With the addition of the ‘missing’ deaths, the death toll in Maharashtra has reached 5,537 as of Tuesday. Apart from these, 81 deaths across the state were reported in one day while nearly 55 deaths were reported in Mumbai.

As of June 17, Nearly 3,309 fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra, taking the state’s tally to 1,16,752. The death toll in Maharashtra has touched 5,651. In Mumbai alone, the number of coronavirus cases has reached 61,587 while the death toll has risen to 3,244.
