In a significant move aimed at enhancing the nutritional value of mid-day meals served in government schools across Maharashtra, the state government has introduced a range of new menu options. This development, outlined in a recent government resolution (GR), departs from the traditional khichdi-based menu, offering children more diverse choices, including egg-based dishes and locally available fruits.

Eggs and Fruits on the Menu:

Starting from the ongoing academic year, students in government schools will enjoy a revamped mid-day meal menu that includes options such as egg pulav, egg biryani, boiled eggs, and servings of bananas or other fruits that are locally sourced. This change aims to provide schoolchildren with a broader array of nutritious and appealing food choices. Under the new guidelines, eggs and fruits will be incorporated into the mid-day meal program, with Wednesdays and Fridays designated for these additions. This shift is intended to enhance the nutritional content of the meals and provide students with valuable protein and essential vitamins.

In addition to eggs and fruits, the GR also reveals plans to introduce more innovative and nutritious recipes, including sweet dishes, into the mid-day meal menu. These changes are part of a broader effort to improve the overall quality of the meals served to schoolchildren.

Implementation and Cost Considerations

To execute this menu overhaul, the responsibility for preparing or procuring the new food items will be entrusted to the existing mid-day meal service providers at respective schools. For vegetarian students, bananas or an equivalent locally available fruit, with a market rate of Rs 5 per egg, will be provided on Wednesdays and Fridays. Indian Express quoted Maharashtra's School Education Minister, Deepak Kesarkar, who said, "We have introduced eggs and bananas in midday meals, considering their nutritional value. A new menu, including sweet dish options, has also been finalized for mid-day meals served in government schools across the state."

Committee Recommendations and Central Government Guidelines

A committee of experts was formed to suggest alternative options for mid-day meals, and their recommendations were submitted in September. While other options are still under consideration, the school education department proceeded with the inclusion of eggs and fruits based on one of the committee's recommendations. This initiative aligns with the central government's directives under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana, which encourages states to introduce innovative and nutritious food choices in midday meals. The GR also specifies that 5% of the funds allocated under the scheme are earmarked for such innovative initiatives.
