The Maharashtra government on Monday said that the reservation of 80 per cent beds in a private hospital and nursing homes for COVID-19 treatment will continue across the state.

According to the order issued by the Maharashtra Public Health department, in Mumbai, only 50 per cent of non-isolation beds and 80 per cent for isolation will be reserved in private hospitals.

Moreover, the price of these beds and personal protective equipment (PPE) kits will remain limited to the rates fixed by the state government. The charges for an ICU bed can’t be more than ₹7,500 per day and if a patient is on a ventilator the charges should be ₹9,000 per day.

In a normal ward, the patients will be charged ₹600 per day and the charge is increased to ₹1,200 for patients admitted in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). If a private hospital charges extra, it will have to justify the same.

Importantly, the charges for ICU beds and ventilator will be inclusive of oxygen used for COVID-19 patients and nursing care. The payment of oxygen for COVID-19 patients is included in the treatment package and no extra charges should be taken by the hospitals.

The private hospital can begin charging regular rates for 50 per cent beds reserved for non-COVID patients. The order issued by the Maharashtra government will remain valid until November 30.

Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had directed private hospitals along with small nursing homes to admit patients suffering from COVID-19 to share the load. However, in the view of rising monsoon-related diseases, these spaces will be converted to manage non-COVID patients.
