In a submission to the Bombay High Court on Tuesday, the Maharashtra Government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that door-to-door COVID-19 vaccinations for bed-ridden and physically challenged individuals will begin on August 1.

The information was provided by Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni to a division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni. The court was hearing a petition filed by two lawyers seeking door-to-door vaccinations for people over the age of 75, specially-abled, and bed-ridden citizens.

The Advocate General told the court that although they planned to commence this pilot project in Pune, they’ve decided to shift it to Mumbai owing to the response from the citizens.

Kumbhakoni added that the state received 3,505 responses from individuals who couldn’t make it to private or civic vaccination centres. This new home vaccination policy will apply to individuals that are unable to move, are bed-ridden, or suffering from terminal illnesses.

The Advocate General reiterated that all vaccinations conducted through this drive will be free of cost, in line with civic and government hospitals across Mumbai.

The bench stated its contentment with the state’s decision saying, “The Union government did not rise to the occasion. However, the state government has risen to the occasion and today there is some light at the end of the tunnel.”

“We hope and trust that the state government and the BMC shall leave no stone unturned to ensure that the eligible bed-ridden and immobile individuals will also have the benefit of COVID-19 vaccine,” the court further said.

The bench also said that the new vaccination policy should also cover bed-ridden or specially-abled individuals who managed to receive the first dose of the vaccine.
