COVID-19: Maharashtra Govt To Focus on Vaccinating People In the 35-44 age group Due to Vaccine Shortage

In order to reduce crowding at vaccination centres and counter vaccine shortage across Maharashtra, State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Facebook Live that the government will only vaccinate individuals in the 35-44 age group. 

Tope added that people between the ages of 18 to 34 will be vaccinated only when vaccine supply is streamlined. The health minister went on to say that the Maharashtra Government may decide to administer Covaxin for all individuals over the age of 45.

This will apply to people that are awaiting their second dose of the vaccine with the state deciding to utilize vaccines provided for the 18-44 age group in case the Centre cannot provide the required doses of Covaxin.  

The Centre reportedly has around 90 lakh doses of the vaccine currently available while it has distributed 17.35 crore vaccine doses to states and union territories at no cost.

“More than 90 lakh Covid Vaccine doses (90,30,670) are still available with the States and UTs to be administered. States with a negative balance are showing more consumption (including wastage) than vaccine supplied as they have not reconciled the vaccine they have supplied to Armed Forces, Furthermore, more than 10 lakh (10,25,000) vaccine doses will be received in addition by the States/UTs within the next three days,” the Union Health Ministry said in a release.
