The Maharashtra health department has intensified surveillance and precautionary measures after a passenger returning from Uganda arrived in Nagpur amid growing concerns over the Ebola outbreak reported in parts of Africa.

Health officials clarified that no Ebola case has been detected in Maharashtra so far, but authorities have activated monitoring systems as a preventive step following central health advisories related to the outbreak situation in Uganda and neighbouring regions.

The passenger who recently travelled from Uganda is reportedly under observation as part of standard health surveillance protocols. State health authorities have directed district surveillance teams, airport health officials and hospitals to remain vigilant and ensure rapid response preparedness in case of any suspected symptoms.

The Centre has already strengthened screening procedures for international travellers arriving from affected African countries, while states have been instructed to enhance isolation readiness and infection-control mechanisms.

Officials said passengers displaying symptoms such as fever, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhoea, body pain or unexplained bleeding are being subjected to detailed medical evaluation and monitoring. Authorities have also appealed to travellers to cooperate fully with screening procedures and immediately report any symptoms after arrival.

The alert comes in the backdrop of renewed global concern over the Ebola outbreak involving the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. The disease spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and is known for its high fatality rate.

Maharashtra health officials maintained that there is no cause for panic at present, but precautionary monitoring and preparedness measures are being continuously reviewed to prevent any possible public health risk.
