Maharashtra records over 16,000 new COVID-19 cases, highest single-day rise this year

16,620 new COVID-19 cases were found in Maharashtra taking the caseload up to 23,14,413 while 50 people have lost their lives.

On Sunday, March 14, Maharashtra recorded 16,620 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This is the highest spike that the state has reported in 2021. For the past two days, the state had been reporting over 15,000 cases on a daily basis. 

Apart from Mumbai, there is a big spike been seen from Nagpur and Pune. There are strict restrictions imposed in some of the places to get the numbers in control. Latur district in Maharashtra has announced that it will be imposing a night curfew from today. 

The Sunday's number propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 23,14,413. Currently, there are 1,26,231 active cases in the state. With 8,861 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recoveries soared to 21,34,072.

More than 50 people from the state have lost their lives to this disease in the last 24 hours while the total has now mounted to 52,861. While 5,83,713 persons are under home quarantine, 5,493 others have been admitted to institutional quarantine centres. The COVID-19 recovery rate and fatality rate in the state stand at 92.21 per cent, and 2.28 per cent respectively.

Mumbai reported 1,962 new COVID-19 cases, 1,259 recoveries and seven deaths on Sunday, March 14, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 3,43,947. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, there are 13,940 active cases and 3,17,579 patients have completely recovered so far. The death toll is at 11,531 in the city. The recovery rate stands at 92 per cent. At present 35,58,359 tests have been conducted by the BMC. There are 31 contaminated zones in slums and chawls while 220 buildings are sealed by the BMC.

Meanwhile, India reported 26,291 new cases, 17,455 recoveries and 118 deaths taking the tally up to 1,13,85,339 on Sunday, March 14. According to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in total 1,10,07,352 have completely recovered. The death toll is at 1,58,725 in the country. At present, there are 2,19,262 active cases. So far, 2,99,08,038 healthcare and frontline workers have been vaccinated in the country.
