Next week onwards the Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has threatened to go on a strike if their demands that comprise tuition fee waiver for postgraduate medical students, incentives related to covid-19 and enhanced hostel facilities at medical colleges run by the government aren’t fulfilled, mentioned reports.

Amit Deshmukh, Maharashtra’s medical education minister had vowed a fee waiver a month ago which hasn’t been implemented as of yet. A team of resident doctors had met with the minister back in August with their demands.

Vice president, MARD, Pranav Jadhav, based on the report by the Hindustan Times elaborated that the file related to the covid-19 related incentives and tuition fee waiver was sent to the state medical education minister by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), but even to date, they haven’t attained any updates regarding the same from the Maharashtra government. Therefore, the association has undertaken the decision to initiate a strike of all resident doctors unless their demands are met. He further elaborated that the association has given the government a seven-day notice prior to commencing its strike.

On August 11, post the meeting with the delegation, Deshmukh made a tweet according to the report stating that for the last year and a half, resident doctors have spearheaded the battle against the coronavirus and burning the midnight oil for months to an end and that his department is hopeful of making the required alterations.
