On Tuesday, a “letter war” commenced between Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the state Governor, B S Koshyari in regards to the recent Sakinaka rape and murder occurrence, highlighted reports.

The governor had written to him recommending a special two-day session of the state legislature to speak about the atrocities against women, in a reply to this, the CM enumerated crime against women in Delhi where the law and order are under the Central government. He also listed other states such as Bihar, Gujrat, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand which are ruled by the BJP and requested the governor to write to the Prime Minister and Central Home Minister to call a four-day Parliament session to discuss these crimes against women.

According to reports, this isn’t the first occurrence of this exchange of letters with a similar incident occurring in October 2020 with the governor writing a letter to the CM regarding the reopening of temples and the CM’s response to it.

A team of women activists from the BJP, headed by Chitra Wagh had urged the governor to convey a special legislature session to discuss the problem. In light of this, the governor wrote to the CM, stating that it would be right to organize a two-day session.

In a four-page response, the CM elaborated that at a time when the opposition wants a special session on the law-and-order situation, the governor’s decision to support this is menacing parliamentary democracy. He stated that this suggestion will result in new disputes, mentioned narratives.

In the letter, he then mentioned the diminishing law and order circumstance in BJP-led states and Delhi, saying that the Maharashtra government has taken measures to ensure that such cases don’t recur. He is of the opinion that these crimes against women and rape are a stain on society and are a matter of national concern, thus it should be discussed at the national level. He then went on to add that recently, New Delhi has seen a rise in crimes against women, law and order of which is under the union government, stated accounts.

The CM also then mentioned the nine-year-old Dalit girl who was gang-raped and murdered in Delhi and to annihilate the evidence, the accused and accomplice performed the victim’s last rites. He added that it was shocking that this incident occurred in a city that is under the Central cabinet. He also wrote about the incident that transpired in Bihar, a state ruled by the BJP, where an MP raped his colleague and an offence was registered against him only after the court’s intervention. He believes that a contrast needs to draw between the prompt action taken by the Maharashtra government and the incidents in New Delhi and Bihar.

He also spoke about the Governor’s home state, Uttarakhand, where the governor was leading for a considerable period, Thackeray was informed that the state has seen a 150% surge in crime against women based on official data, the CM questioned if a special session should be demanded there as well, highlighted reports.
