In seven weeks, Maharashtra witnessed its highest COVID-19 vaccination numbers on Sunday, November 28, with almost 3 lakh people getting inoculated, highlighted reports. Experts are of the opinion that this can be attributed to the Omicron fear.

Based on accounts, whilst some attribute this rise in numbers to the new variant, others believe it is owing to the campaign launched by the state government to propel vaccination. Maharashtra has reportedly attained the first dose inoculation number of 80 per cent of its population.

According to the CoWin portal, over 2.91 lakh individuals were jabbed across Maharashtra till 10 pm. On the earlier seven Sundays, the numbers were between 43,000 to 1.76 lakh. On October 10, the numbers were significantly higher with 4.29 lakh people being vaccinated.

It is claimed that Fridays and Saturdays are when the crowds would flock to the vaccination centres, with the numbers being considerably low on Sundays. Fewer numbers on Sunday can also be because many districts do not conduct inoculation drives on the said day.

Amid concerns of the new Omicron variant, the authorities have appealed to all to adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines. From domestic locations, travellers will now have to carry their RT-PCR tests that need to be valid within 72 hours of travel.

Additionally, on Sunday, Maharashtra reported 832 new coronavirus cases and 33 fatalities. Whilst 841 patients recovered, there are now 8,193 active cases in the state.
