On July 28, 2018, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will carry out a one-day nationwide strike to protest against National Medical Commission Bill, 2017. Dr. Parthiv Sanghvi, secretary of IMA told Mumbai Live that more than three lakh doctors will be participating in the strike.

The release said,

IMA, fully conscious of its responsibility towards the generations of doctors to come, is withdrawing non-emergency medical services across the country on Saturday, July 28, 2018, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.,"

The doctors’ association said that on Saturday, patients will face problems as all non-emergency services including OPD would remain shut for a day but critical services including deliveries, emergencies, and in-patient care will be provided.

The release further said,

The bill has a draconian character which will cause irreparable damage to the interests of all the stakeholders and would reduce down regulatory mechanism to a puppetry with its strings attached to the government,"

In Medical Council of India, 80 per cent members are elected while 20 per cent are appointed. However, henceforth, 90 per cent members will be appointed and 10 per cent will be elected. The IMA feels that due to this decision, there will be no transparency in the medical sector.

Six-months-ago, doctors had observed strike in order to protest. However, when the central government gave a positive response, they backed off.
