The Government of India has extended the COVID-19 containment guidelines to March 31 this year. “The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an Order today to extend the existing Guidelines for Surveillance, Containment and Caution to remain in force upto 31.03.2021,” an official release said on Friday.
This comes as over 16,000 people tested positive for the virus in India over a 24 hour period, thus leading to some concerns among health officials. In addition to extending the guidelines, the MHA has also asked states and union territories to boost their vaccination rates so as to mitigate the spread of the infection.

Although the new uptick in cases is not comparable to the peak in September-October, the MHA guidelines suggest that ensuring surveillance, containment, and caution will be key to defeat the virus.
The central government has further recommended taking strict measures with regard to the containment of cases inside designated containment zones.

Keeping this in mind, the centre said that containment zones should be demarcated carefully while making sure containment measures are followed strictly within these zones.
The government also recommends promoting and enforcing COVID-appropriate behaviour while also following the prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to the permitted activities.
