A doctor in Mumbai may have set a world record for surgically removing the largest gallbladder cyst.
Surgical gastroenterologist and consultant liver transplantation surgeon at Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road, Dr Imran Shaikh operated on Girish Mane, a 58-year-old Bhayander resident a month ago. The patient had a lump in the upper right-side of the abdomen for more than 25 years and was referred to Shaikh in June with acute stomach pain.
The doctors suspected it to be a gallbladder tumour after looking at the MRI scan reports. However, they were shocked to find the swelling to be a large gallbladder mass, which was successfully removed in a planned surgery. The gall bladder had swollen up to 1 feet and 2 inches long.
The cyst weighed 1.7 kg and was filled with 370 ml of fluid. A normal gallbladder is about 6-7 cm long and cant old more than 25 ml of liquid.
Mane was recently discharged from the hospital with no other health complication. The radiological and pathological data of the cyst is being collated so that it can be documented in medical literature as world’s largest gall bladder mass removed.

When Mane was diagnosed with a minor swelling in his abdomen over 20 years ago, doctors had asked him to ignore it as they thought the swelling will soon recede and he might not need a surgery. However, the swelling kept on increasing with time and caused Mane a great deal of abdominal discomfort, digestive complications. He had been on painkillers regularly.
The existing record is held by Dr Jeevan Kankaria, who removed a 30-cm-long gall bladder cyst from Suman Rao’s stomach on August 10, 2016 at Jaipur.
