In a worrisome news for Mumbaikars, the city’s daily COVID-19 caseload has seen a significant jump on Tuesday, June 7 since the last few days by reporting more than 1k infections in a day.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s data, Mumbai reported 1,242 new coronavirus infections, almost double since Monday, June 6, which recorded 676 cases. However, no new COVID-linked deaths was witnessed during the day.

It is pertinent to note that Tuesday's infection count was the highest since January 29, when the city had reported 1,411 new cases and 11 fatalities.

Moreover, for the first time since March-end, the civic body has increased daily COVID-19 tests to more than 15,000. According to the bulletin, a total of 17,145 tests have been conducted since Monday evening.

Besides, 74 patients were admitted to various hospitals, taking the count of hospitalised patients to 254.

This came after municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal last week directed officials to increase testing and mass tracing.

On the same day, Maharashtra recorded 1,881 new coronavirus cases, 81 per cent more than the previous day and highest since February 18. With this it can be notified that Mumbai has been driving the state's coronavirus figures in the last few days.

Elaborating further, reports stated that while 68 per cent of the new cases in the last week are from Mumbai alone, at least 17 per cent are from Thane and 7.42 per cent from Pune.

Overall, the number of active cases in the state has risen from 3,142 during May 23-29 to 7,253 during May 30-June 5.

Of the 5,888 cases across Maharashtra till June 5, at least 4.3 per cent are hospitalized.

On the other hand, the state also reported one case of B.A.5 variant, health department official added.

As per the latest report of 'whole genomic sequencing' from BJ Medical College, Pune, a 31-year-old woman from Pune was found positive for B.A.5 variant, the official release said. The woman was asymptomatic and recovered in home isolation," the release added.

For those unversed, on May 28, for the first time in Maharashtra four patients of B.A.4 sub-lineage and three cases of B.A.5 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 were found.

Owing to this spike, Maharashtra government has been hinting of making masks mandatory at closed places and also warned of lockdown-like restrictions if cases continue to rise at this pace.
