Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has brought a lot of worries for the people and the government, and while we were dealing with this spread,  another crisis has started looming in our lives. Many people in Maharashtra and other parts of the country are also battling COVID-19 with Mucormycosis, a black fungus that has claimed lives across India.

On one hand, while the number of COVID-19 cases is declining, cases related to black fungus infection have increasing. Data reveals that over 7,000 such cases have been found in the country so far and the infection has claimed the lives of more than 200 patients.

Out of the 7,250 patients diagnosed patients, Maharashtra has the highest number of cases and deaths, followed by Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. As of now, Gujarat has 1,163 patients and 63 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh has reported 31 deaths. Cases have also been on a rise in other states, especially Rajasthan and Telangana.

Among the districts in Maharashtra, Pune has the most number of COVID-19 and cases with Mucormycosis. Data reveals that a total of 273 patients have been affected in Pune, followed by 148 in Nagpur, 67  in Aurangabad, 60  in Nanded, 48 in Chandrapur, 28 in Latur and 22 in Thane.

Observing this rise, expects have informed about the need for multi-faceted specialist services, which would incur heavy cost. However, measures are being taken to avoid burdening the patients. Keeping this in mind and to tackle the crisis currently, Health Minister Rajesh Tope, a few days back, announced that patients with Mucormycosis will be treated for free at selected hospitals under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana.
