Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reportedly been successful in containing the cases of mucormycosis, the lethal fungal infection.

According to reports, currently, 30 people are undergoing treatment across various hospitals across the city. In Mumbai, so far, 273 people have been infected with mucormycosis, out of which 186 patients have been cured.

Moreover, these patients are reportedly being treated at private hospitals including KEM, Nair, Sion and Cooper hospitals of the municipality. A total of 641 patients from outside Mumbai who were infected with the fungal infection have been treated in Mumbai. However, 132 people succumbed to the disease whereas 440 people were discharged after overcoming it.

Mucormycosis is a post-COVID complication where patients who have recovered from coronavirus suffer from a fungal infection. Most of the early symptoms of this disease include headache, facial swelling, swelling around the eye, pain in the nasal area, black particles found in the nose or upper area of the mouth and sinus congestion.

On the other hand, the civic body had earlier set up a committee, under the chairmanship of Dr Hemant Deshmukh, to be the only source of distribution of amphotericin B injections to the private and government hospitals. As the number of patients had increased, the demand for amphotericin B injections has also risen. However, due to the unavailability of injections, the municipality has entrusted the responsibility of its distribution to this committee to prevent black marketing and hoarding.
