On April 25, Saturday, the number of coronavirus cases in Mumbai hit the 5,000-mark and with this, the city recorded the highest number of fresh cases in a single day, i.e. 602. With the emergence of new cases, the tally for the number of cases in Mumbai stands at 5,049 with 191 deaths. Out of which, 13 deaths were observed by the end of Saturday.
In the meantime, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has been aggressively pushing the testing and contact tracing measures. So far, it has identified 98,859 people who came in touch with 4,447 positive patients (count till Friday evening), of which 15,359 are at high risk and 83,500 at low risk. However, as per a civic official, it is not necessary that all high-risk contacts may be infected. As per the data by BMC, of the total cases, 1,795 cases were detected in contact tracing, containment zone and fever clinic measures.
BMC commissioner Praveen Pardeshi told Hindustan Times, “Because of our aggressive contact tracing strategy, we have identified over 15,000 high-risk contacts of patients. Of these, at least 6,123 people have been shifted to institutional quarantine facilities. Such large-scale contact tracing helped avoid a larger outbreak of coronavirus.”
As the city witnessed a spike in the number of cases on Saturday, the BMC officials sealed some more areas across Mumbai. The number of containment zones in Mumbai increased to 1121. The civic body also removed 231 containment zones from its list, after the areas completed the 14-day quarantine period without recording any new cases. The BMC categorises containment zones into blue, orange and red based on the severity of danger of the contagion in the area.
While Mumbai crossed the 5,000+ figure, the tally of total cases in Maharashtra reached 7,976 on April 25, 2020, with 811 new cases being recorded throughout the day. This is the highest single-day spike since the first case on March 9. The sudden rise in the number of cases came after the state witnessed a significant dip by recording only 394 fresh cases on Friday from the then highest one-day rise of 778 on Thursday and 552 and 431 cases on the two previous days.
