What’s the story?

The Government Dental College and Hospital, CST, is all set to start a dedicated oral cancer department, in which doctors will not only diagnose the disease but will also conduct surgery and provide chemotherapy.

This is the first time in Maharashtra that a dental hospital will now offer treatment to patients with oral cancer.

Reason behind this move

The decision was taken by the state health department to reduce the load on Tata Memorial Hospital, the country's only cancer hospital. The state government has sanctioned around INR 10 Cr for the new oral cancer department.

Four medical officers, surgery professionals, five nurses and one clerk have been sanctioned to join the hospital. There will be oncologists who will be trained at Tata Memorial Hospital to conduct minor surgeries and provide chemotherapy. There will be a tie-up between St George Hospital, JJ Hospital and Tata Memorial Hospital. 11 posts have been decided so far and this system will come into practice within 7-8 months," Dr Mansingh Pawar, Dean, Government Dental College and Hospital.

The Government Dental College and Hospital currently gets between 25 and 30 cases of oral cancer per month, but patients are referred to Tata Memorial for further treatment.
