COVID-19: Mumbai Hospitals will Soon Commence Trials of Covovax and ZyCoV-D Vaccines

Mumbai’s KEM Hospital will soon begin Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials of the Covovax coronavirus vaccine among adults, as per a report. Further, Nair Hospital will start Phase 3 trials of the ZyCoV-D vaccine for children while JJ Hospital has concluded the enrolment process for this vaccine among adults. ZyCoV-D is produced by Zydus Cadila and its efficacy data is currently being studied.

The pharma giant is undertaking trials across 59 locations for children between the ages of 12-18 and adults aged up to 65. Fourteen of these sites are in Maharashtra, including Mumbai’s JJ and Nair hospitals.

As per BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani, Nair Hospital will enrol 50 children for the trial process. 

Covovax will be manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) and will go through Phase 2 and 3 trials in 20 sites across the country, including eight in Maharashtra. Nair and KEM hospitals are currently awaiting clearances from their respective ethics committees.

Dean of Nair Hospital, Dr Ramesh Bharmal said, “We submitted the proposal to the ethics committee, they had queries. We have resubmitted the proposal clarifying their queries. We are awaiting their final nod.”
