Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is reportedly planning to initiate a ward-wise vaccination centre for the coronavirus from next week.

According to sources, Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal gave the information regarding the same in the hearing held on Thursday, May 13.

Moreover, the vaccination centre will have the capacity to vaccinate about 70,000 people every day. In addition, authorities hope that if such camps are started, senior citizens and others who could not go to the vaccination centre would get vaccinated. Meanwhile, municipal employees can go to housing societies and vaccinate them as well.

The Bombay High Court has further directed the BMC to state in the affidavit when the ward-wise vaccination centres will be started and what steps the corporation will take regarding the vaccination program.

On the other hand, just for three days in Mumbai, from May 17 to May 19, the BMC across the city will put on hold the compulsory online booking for vaccine slots and permit walk-in registration for those above 60 years of age-eligible for a second dose of Covishield and Covaxin for citizens of all ages who are to get the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and the specially-abled. However, in these three days, no one would be administered the first dose for COVID-19. Furthermore, the civic body has asked people to access vaccination centres nearest to their homes or in their ward for walk-in registrations.
