Earlier in the month, when Mumbai Live had met Rajesh Tope, we had shared exclusive news with our readers that BMC is planning to turn schools into quarantine centres to deal with the increase in the number of cases.

The plan is in its final stage now and teachers and principals of the schools are likely to be assigned duties to supervise the arrangements in these schools. A circular instructing the same has been issued by the municipal corporation.

In the circular that was issued on Thursday, the BMC education department asked its deputy education officers across the city to ensure that necessary arrangements are made in schools that are to be converted as quarantine facilities.

‘If there is some issue with respect to water, lights etc, they need to be fixed immediately. Staff from the school like teachers and principals can be appointed to supervise the facility,” says the circular issued by BMC education officer Mahesh Palkar.

The BMC has also directed all its officers to make sure that all the teachers and principals of civic body-run schools are available to work in the city in these facilities.

“Some teachers have reportedly gone to their villages during the break. It is important to ensure that they are given the necessary orders to come back in case of need,” the circular further states.

The teachers have asked for proper training prior to being handed over the responsibility to run these temporary isolation facilities. Along with this, they have also stated that they must be taught to ensure their safety while supervising these facilities.

Mumbai still remains the hotspot for coronavirus in Maharashtra as it has recorded 4,205 cases so far. Almost 62 per cent of the total cases (6,711), in the state, have emerged from Mumbai.
