Maharashtra is one of the worst impacted states in India from COVID-19. As the state grapples to contain the coronavirus to spread any further, it has kept over one lakh people in home quarantine. As per the data made available by state health department, till Wednesday, April 22, 1.09 lakh people have been asked to be in home-quarantine while 8,051 were in institutional quarantine

What is worth noting that almost 50 per cent of these people were just from Mumbai.

Senior state officials accepted that it was easier to keep a tab on people that were placed in institutional quarantine but also reiterated that it is not possible to keep everyone in this facility as they not only to reserve it for patients that are more likely to have complications. They also maintained that for now only high-risk contacts are from dense pockets like in the case of Worli or Dharavi are being kept in intuitional quarantine.

Elaborating the same an official said, “With several being tested, we are asking high-risk contacts of positive patients who have tested negative to be in home quarantine.”

Maharashtra government already has an app that it has been using to monitor patients that have been asked to remain in home-quarantine. The state had drawn out plans to expand it to the entire state. The pilot of the app was carried out in Nasik. The idea of this app is to help users report their home quarantine data with a real-time selfie using facial recognition technologies, while the app also collects the user’s location data that allows authorities to know they’ve been at home the entire time.
