Chikungunya epidemic has come under control in Mumbai. But compared to the state, the maximum number of patients have been found in Mumbai till August 31. The number of patients in Mumbai is almost 25 percent as compared to the total number of patients reported in Maharashtra. Sources in the health department say that the intermittent rains in Mumbai have created a fertile environment for the growth of chikungunya.


In Mumbai, low-lying areas get waterlogged due to occasional rains. chikungunya is spreading due to the large number of mosquitoes breeding in the stagnant rain water. 521 chikungunya cases have been detected in the state from January 1 to August 31. Out of these, almost 25 percent of the patients are from Mumbai.

Health department officials informed that 131 patients were found in Mumbai from January 1 to August 31. 69 patients have been found in Mumbai in the three months of June, July and August. This year, 61 chikungunya patients have been found in Pune after Mumbai. Meanwhile, for the first time since 2016, chikungunya patients have been found in large numbers this year. 73 cases of chikungunya were reported in 2016. Symptoms of chikungunya include fever, body aches, persistent joint pain, and skin rashes.
