21 Per Cent Rise In cases of Hepatitis A and E

Mumbai registered 1,494 cases of Hepatitis A and E till November which is 21 per cent more as compared to 2017. In 2017, the city saw 1,234 cases of Hepatitis A and E, which then reduced to 1,147 in 2018.

In a recent report released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai registered 1,494 cases of Hepatitis A and E till November which is 21 per cent more as compared to 2017. In 2017, the city saw 1,234 cases of Hepatitis A and E, which then reduced to 1,147 in 2018. However, this year, the number of cases increased owing to the poor quality of tap water. The data further revealed that the highest number of cases was recorded in June and July, at 282 and 270 respectively. 

Causes of hepatitis A is caused by a virus that infects liver cells and causes inflammation. The inflammation can affect how your liver works and cause other signs and symptoms of hepatitis A. The virus most commonly spreads when you eat or drink something contaminated with faecal matter, even just tiny amounts.

Hepatitis E is a transmitted infection that is typically self-limited. It is caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV) and is spread by fecally contaminated water within endemic areas or through the consumption of uncooked or undercooked meat. Outbreaks can be epidemic and individual.

The prevention includes drinking boiled water during monsoon, not eating raw fruits and vegetables, avoiding roadside food and washing hands thoroughly. The treatment typically involves intake of multivitamins, high carbohydrate diet, treatment to strengthen liver function and hydration.
