AIDS is a chronic, potentially life-threatening condition caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). By damaging the patient's immune system, HIV interferes with the body's ability to fight the organisms that cause diseases. It makes the patients more prone to other diseases like tuberculosis and pneumonia.

However, owing to initiatives like ART, life expectancy in patients has increased considerably. Previously, people with AIDS did not survive for a longer time as their immunity system deteriorated. However, life expectancy has now increased by 20 years owing to other medical advancements as well.
