New data shows that nine of the 24 civic wards in Mumbai are seeing a higher growth rate of COVID-19 cases as compared to the city’s average. Five wards from the eastern suburbs of the city witnessed a growth rate between 0.14 per cent to 0.21 per cent.

It is also worth pointing out that most of these cases are mostly being reported from highrises of the city. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s COVID-19 cases saw a growth of 0.13 per cent over a seven day period.

Officials said that regions reporting the most cases include Tilak Nagar, Mulund, Nehru Nagar (Kurla), Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, and Bhandup. As for the western suburbs, a rise in cases is being witnessed in Bandra, Khar, Andheri, and Jogeshwari (East).

Among central Mumbai wards, only F North is showing a higher number of cases with a growth of 0.15 per cent. The M-West ward comprising of Chembur and Tilak Nagar is currently seeing the highest growth rate at 0.21 per cent. Officials added that average detections in the region have increased twofold from 15-20 cases as of a week ago.

“In several cases, people have wasted 4-5 days to get tested, by which time the family members got infected too,” said Dr Bhupendra Patil, Medical Officer of Health (MOH). He also said that 98 per cent of the cases are being detected from highrises and structures in Tilak Nagar, Subhash Nagar, Sindhi Society, and Bhakti Park.

L Ward (Kurla) is witnessing the third-highest growth rate at 0.17 per cent while officials report a 3 per cent increase in daily detections since January. It is said that this ward has seen the addition of 141 new cases between February 2 and 9.

Assistant Commissioner of the T Ward, Kishore Gandhi said that many of the cases are currently being reported from the highrises of Mulund while adding that the addition of 20 to 30 cases per day doesn’t seem as drastic given that they were facing around 50 to 60 daily cases in October and November.

A closer look at the increase in cases indicates that many of the new cases could likely be avoided with proper adherence to COVID-19 protocols and guidelines set by the civic body and health departments.

Despite rising concerns, officials from the civic body said that the sharp increase in new cases cannot be attributed to the recent resumption of local train services as citizens have been commuting on buses and other modes of transport for a few months now.
